Cell Phone & Electronic Device Policy

PS/IS 155 Student Cell Phone Policy Grades K-5

Due to new state law, the use of cellphones and other handheld devices is strictly prohibited from entry bell to dismissal bell, covering all instructional and non-instructional times including lunch, recess, trips and transitions.

*Permitted Uses / Exemptions Use of devices is allowed only:

  • For a specific instructional purpose authorized by a teacher or administrator.
  • To monitor health needs (e.g., glucose monitor).
  • For translation services.
  • Where required by law, including usage under IEP, 504, or healthcare plans. Cellphones are not to be used during school hours. All classrooms have a device storage unit in which students are to turn their devices in to their 1st period teacher to be locked away for the entirety of the school day.

Process

Building Entrance: As students enter the building, they will:

  • Turn their phone off.
  • Turn in the devices to their 1st period teacher

Building Exit: As students exit the building at the end of the school day, they will:

  • Receive their devices from their 1st teacher
  • Turn on their devices after exiting the building

Violations

Below is a list of potential student violations. Each of these violations will result in the student’s phone and/or pouch being confiscated by school administration or days spent in the SAVE Room

  • Intentionally withholding devices
  • Forgetting to turn in a device to a teacher
  • Using the cell phone/device during school hours

Disciplinary Action

  • 1st violation: Phone + Pouch will be confiscated for the day and parent/guardian will be notified immediately.
  • 2nd violation: Student’s parent/guardian must come to the school to pick up their child’s phone.
  • 3rd violation: Student’s phone and pouch will be confiscated, student’s parent/guardian must come to the school to pick up their child’s phone, and child will turn their phone in to the Dean every morning and will receive it back at the end of the day, This routine will be daily for the following 30 days.

*Permitted Uses / Exemptions Use of devices is allowed only:

  • For a specific instructional purpose authorized by a teacher or administrator.
  • To monitor health needs (e.g., glucose monitor).
  • For translation services.
  • Where required by law, including usage under IEP, 504, or healthcare plans. Cellphones are not to be used during school hours. At the beginning of the school year, every student will be assigned a personal Yondr Pouch, similar to being assigned a Chromebook. While the Yondr Pouch is considered school property, it is each student’s responsibility to bring their pouch with them to school every day.

Process

Building Entrance: As students enter the building, they will:

  • Turn their phone off.
  • Unlock their empty Yondr Pouch using an unlocking base at the building entrance
  • Place their phone inside the pouch, securely close it and store it in their backpack. Each student will maintain possession of their cellphone inside their Yondr Pouch for the duration of the school day. Students arriving late will go through this process at the Main Office.

Building Exit: As students exit the building at the end of the school day, they will:

  • Unlock their pouch using an unlocking base at the building exit
  • Remove their phone from their pouch.
  • Securely close their empty pouch and place it in their backpack for the next day.

Violations

Below is a list of potential student violations. Each of these violations will result in the student’s phone and/or pouch being confiscated by school administration or days spent in the SAVE Room

  • Physical damage to the pouch in an attempt to circumvent its intended purpose. (Ex: Discoloration, pen marks, bent pin or stripped lock inside the pouch)
  • Forgetting or losing the pouch.
  • Using the cell phone during school hours or refusing to secure it in the pouch

Disciplinary Action

  • 1st violation: Phone + Pouch will be confiscated for the day and parent/guardian will be notified immediately.
  • 2nd violation: Student’s parent/guardian must come to the school to pick up their child’s phone.
  • 3rd violation: Student’s phone and pouch will be confiscated, student’s parent/guardian must come to the school to pick up their child’s phone, and child will turn their phone in to the Dean every morning and will receive it back at the end of the day, This routine will be daily for the following 30 days.
